With the cannabis industry booming, it’s natural that we’re going to see a lot more accessories and ways to enjoy the herb than ever before. In just a short time, vapes have evolved from large machines like the Volcano to little, tiny, inconspicuous pens.

The technology inside those little vape pens is impressive and it’s even better that you can choose between using a liquid cannabis concentrate or actual dry marijuana flower. The variety of vape pens available though, make it hard to decide which is best for you, so this guide is full of tips to consider when purchasing a cannabis vape pen.

AIRFLOW
Vape pens are meant to be efficient and airflow is really the make or break component of its efficiency. With increased airflow, we receive a cooler vapour that’s less harsh on the throat and lungs than a pipe, joint, or bong. If a vape pen has decreased air flow, it’s a warmer draw… for some (especially health-conscious vapers) that’s a deal breaker.

It should be noted that the quality of airflow can change from a clean vaporizer to a clogged/dirty vaporizer. Most users find cleaning their vape once a week is sufficient, but it depends on the user and the device.

AUTOMATIC SHUTOFF
Ok… so… raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten a little forgetful after consuming some cannabis. Don’t be embarrassed, it’s a natural side effect, that’s why features like this are greatly appreciated. More than some post-vaping forgetfulness though, the feature is beneficial if you’re rooting around in your bag and accidentally turn it on, if you get caught up in a conversation… or if you turn it on and get distracted while it’s heating up. Not only is it a great safety feature, but it saves you from wasting some good herb.

USB CHARGING
Older cannabis pens required you to unscrew it for charging. Those models aren’t as popular anymore. Instead, USB charging ports are becoming the standard. It’s much more convenient, no matter where you’re charging.

BATTERY POWER
You don’t want to be the person who brings an uncharged vape pen to the party do you? A long battery life is a wonderful feature in a vape pen. We recommend using one that has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (240mAh), for many casual users it will last for a week before needing to be charged again.

MULTIPLE POWER SETTINGS
Some people like a little bit of vape, while others need a lot at once. Whatever your preference is, it’s nice to have options. Many pens just have one setting “ON”, but there are a few that will offer 2.8V, 3.2V, and 3.6V, which is to say: low, medium, and high.

THREAD COMPATIBILITY
Most quality pens and oil cartridges we’ve seen are 510 thread compatible, it’s considered the industry standard now. Each oil brand will have their own cartridge, but as long as the cartridge isn’t too big for the pen, and it’s 510 compatible, then you’ll have no problem. This also means being able to expand beyond just one brand to try different oils.

WARRANTY
While vape pens might be fun, most users understand they’re not a toy; they’re an investment. Whether you’re a casual or chronic vaper, your pen should last years. Most warranty for vape pens are for only a year, but it’s better than no warranty at all… I’ve learned that if a company isn’t willing to stand behind their product (even if it’s just for the first year), it’s usually because it’s a sub-par product, and not worth your money, time, or the frustration you’ll likely spend towards it.
